An Item Shop's Quest
Here's a slightly revised version of my Item Shop game, first posted on SB. You might find this post similar in format to Kelenas' quest. The setting will be quite different however. Hopefully.
The name of this world is Aeria, a massive, floating continent. Although without vast oceans, it possesses plenty of seas, lakes, and rivers. This continent is massive, with not even four percent of the total land mass explored. Thus, explorers and adventurers set forth to discover distant lands, stumbling upon wondrous ruins and vast networks of caves, filled with gold, adventure, treasure... and deadly monsters. No matter how many times a dungeon is cleared however, more monsters, along with treasure, seem to appear. But that has little to do with you. After all, you run an item shop.
As this will be the first playthrough, you will start as a member of the Merchants Guild. Now, how do you look on your Guild Merchant license...?

You've set up shop in a recently established frontier town. It's so new, the current lord has yet to decide what to name it! He's gathered the current townsfolk and asked them to decide on a name.

What are the different skills for, exactly? Ie, what's the difference between "Negotiation", "Appraisal" and "Shopkeeping"?Nanao-kun wrote:Note that you may request knowledge that you feel the storekeeper may have access to.

Re: An Item Shop's Quest
Negotiation is your skill at debating and bartering. Appraisal is your skill at being able to tell what something is, and how valuable it is. Shopkeeping is a general purpose skill to keep your shop in tip top shape, improving your customers view of your shop and your reputation.Kelenas wrote:What are the different skills for, exactly? So Nanao-kun, how skilled would we be if we stacked all 3 of our skills in one field? An what are the levels of skill that we can have in any one field?

Skills are graded using a letter based system.Ironforge wrote:So Nanao-kun, how skilled would we be if we stacked all 3 of our skills in one field? An what are the levels of skill that we can have in any one field?
As for how skilled you'll be, you'll have to find out yourself.

Re: An Item Shop's Quest
For skills, everything starts at F rank.Psyckosama wrote:And default letter is?
If your focus is Crafting, and choose Weapon Smith, Armour Smith, and Gold Smith, your skill rank in the three would be...
Chosen Skills + Crafting Focus
Weapon Smith F >Skill Bonus> F++ >Focus Bonus> D++
Armour Smith F >Skill Bonus> F++ >Focus Bonus> D++
Gold Smith F >Skill Bonus> F++ >Focus Bonus> D++
Basically, a chosen skill will increase the rank from F by 2 points, leading to a F++. A related Major focus brings that up by two letter grades, while a Minor focus increases it by one letter grade. Note that there are no minuses, such as D--.
If you put all three skill points into one skill...
Weapon Smith F >Skill Bonus> F++ >Skill Bonus> E+ >Skill Bonus> D >Major Focus Bonus> B

It seems Crafting and Magic are the only things that stand out so far. Shall I flip a coin to see where the rest go based on what the rest of you chose?

Your name is Lydia, born to two happy parents who made sure to keep you fed and educated. The name of the village is Roseview, named for the many natural roses surrounding the village. One day, your village received a visitor in the form of a traveling merchant. Interested in her job, you began to question her. Over the course of the week, you learned a fair bit from her, limited by your rather young mind, unable to fully grasp the merchant's teachings. Nevertheless, you're certain you are much more learned compared to before you met the Merchant. The major topics the merchant covered with you pertained to general weapon smithing and repair, how to tell if something is valuable or not, and a bit of advice on how to properly run a shop if it ever comes to it. That was when you were eight years old. A few years later, your parents decided to apprentice you in their crafts.
Weapon Smith F -> F++
Shopkeeping F -> F++
Appraisal F -> F++
Your father, a fairly skilled craftsman, specializing particularly in accessories, decides to teach you his ways. While he doesn't major in it, he does teach you to improve your smithing ability, although he isn't particularly fond of his little girl working in a forge. He does however, take delight in teaching you how to craft minor things such as bracelets, necklaces, rings, etc. out of gold and other precious metals.
Weapon Smith F -> D
Gold Smith F -> D
Your mother happened to be, although weak, a mage. She taught you the basic ways of magic, how to channel the magic stored in your body, and how all usable magic comes from the world around them. You prove to be fairly apt at learning magic, and you manage to get down three useful spells. She taught you how to cast a small ball of fire the size of a fist at a target, and how to create a small ball of magical light in your hand. Firebolt and Candlelight respectively. The last one was the Minor Heal spell, a spell that allows you to heal your wounds. As useful as it sounds, it can only heal minor wounds, such as scratches and cuts. It is unable to repair organs or fix broken bones and the like.
Spell Casting F -> E
Learned
Ever since meeting the merchant when you were a mere child, you've wanted to experience the feeling of a successful sale.
Although your parents were reluctant to let you go, you manage to convince them. Along with your savings of 5000 pix, your parents give you some start up money of about...
[] 5000 pix (Hard Mode. Will need a loan.)
[] 15000 pix (Normal Mode. Won't need a loan, but money will be very tight for a while.)
[] 35000 pix (Easy Mode. Won't need a loan, and will have plenty of starter money left.)
With all this in hand, you set out with a caravan to head to the frontier town of Whiteplains.
(Will write up the rest after the difficulty mode vote.)

Huh, weird. The +'s disappeared in my last post. Anyway, since this is a small forum, I'll call the votes for the first option to reach two votes. I'll start on the continued update.

They give a fair amount of money, just enough to purchase a decent piece of property. Combined with your own funds, you might just make it. Next up is what you plan to sell. Luckily, your parents have already given you some of the more common items they have, including...
A Tier 3 Ring.
You look up to your parents in surprise. They tell you that it's a goodbye present and they already can't wait for you to come home. You hold back your tears and smile to them. Soon, you're on the caravan amidst a few boxes, holding your personal belongings along with various trinkets your father made for you to sell. While technically, an item shop can sell whatever they want, selling only one type of item will probably alter how people view your store. Nevertheless, you keep a firm heart as the caravan heads to Whiteplains.
Two weeks and many stops later, you've arrived.
First order of business. You need to purchase some property. In order to do so, you'll need to meet with the person in charge of managing the various properties. You think so anyway. Moving along, you head on over to the most imposing building in town, as it's likely where you can find the one in charge of the town.
...
It seems you were right. The man who governs this town indeed lives here.
After a bunch of stuff, you've managed to purchase a property just off the side of the town center. Not too shabby, but it set you back 17000 pix. You now have 3000 pix left. Heading over to your newly purchased property, you find it to be in fair condition. A little dirty, but nothing your shopkeeping skills can't handle.
After sprucing the place up a bit, you decide to take inventory.

Treasure
How will you distribute your items?
Stock
You can collect and/or buy different types of items to put in stock, which will be sold over the course of the week.
There are three rankings for placing stock in terms of the store.

- Window - These items are placed at the window of the shop, and will be the
most likely to be sold. They also represent what you’re selling, and are
used to attract customers. - Shelves - These items are placed on tables and shelves, and are visible when
customers step inside. These are the second most likely to be sold.
These usually leave an impression on what your store sells. - Storage - These items are in storage and are unlikely to sell as no one can see them.

Because getting to know our town first is needed and we can spread the name of our store to the people who live here.
