You're lead to Hornwood Hall, the seat of house Hornwood.

You're rushed to see Lord Hornwood who glances down at Arya and scowls. "I just received a raven from Winterfel telling me that Lady Arya had vanished and had seemingly followed her teacher on a mission he'd been given without her father's leave. Lord Eddard wishes for you to send him a raven immediately."

He takes a deep breath. "Now. What have you discovered?"

"It's something to consider. You'll certainly outlive your father if you don't come to an end in misadventure, though more likely than not you'll have to enforce your claim. Assume you've done that. Where do you go from there?"

I kind of want to get him thinking more long-term first. Or rather, just get him thinking in the first place.

"I just don't want to see my people rotting on those islands anymore. I want to be a worthy lord. I want to be a son to my father."

I sink into meditation briefly, to apologize to the spirits of those laid to rest here for the disturbance.

After that, I'll explore around a bit more before letting Ned know what I found, and that it's not really a good idea to go down there right now. At least, not for any of the sensitives in his family. It's definitely a place where you could send people to take their Trial of Spirit though.

He understands... but the idea of his family crypt being possessed by such an abomination angers him.

"Given how vague the message sent was I felt it would be better to head straight here to get the full measure of the situation."

Given how 'bandits, halp!' was essentially the contents of it I was halfway tempted to go and tell him 'I'm sorry, your message wasn't anywhere near vague enough, could you have been a little less specific?', but that wouldn't have been diplomatic.

"We did come across one of your villages in the process of being sacked on the way here, dealt with it, and seeing as most of it was on fire escorted the inhabitants here as well. Well, them the few surviving bandits whom I've handed over to you guards. I will be speaking with them later and on a number of subjects."

Anyway, Arya and I will go send a raven to Winterfell. My own message will be along the lines of 'Arrived at Hornwood Hall. Arya safe and in good health. Considered turning back but deemed likelihood of repeat performance too high. Minor skirmish along the way with bandit force in the process of sacking a village. Escorted rescued villagers to Hornwood Hall. Will apprise of further developments.' which I then sign and have Arya write one of her own.

"I just don't want to see my people rotting on those islands anymore. I want to be a worthy lord. I want to be a son to my father."

I nod. "Raiding doesn't really make for a sustainable economy. Much less if you want to grow, since it relies on increasing amounts of plunder. You'll likely have your job cut out for you if you want to aim for long term prosperity and expansion, resentment towards the Kingdoms aside."

He understands... but the idea of his family crypt being possessed by such an abomination angers him.

I tell him I'll try to find a way to get rid of it in a more permanent manner. The fact that it's less an abomination and more a more or less natural occurrence I'll keep to myself for now, since it could well be seen as an abomination from a certain point of view.

Well, consider how hard it is to put a proper message on the legs of a raven and how lightly populated the north is... he really didn't know much.

"We did come across one of your villages in the process of being sacked on the way here, dealt with it, and seeing as most of it was on fire escorted the inhabitants here as well. Well, them the few surviving bandits whom I've handed over to you guards. I will be speaking with them later and on a number of subjects."

His eyes go dark. "We both will..."

She does so, looking a little embarrassed. "Do you want to read it first, master?"

If you do it mentions how she trailed you for DAYS and only joined you outright once you were half the way there... (Cat is going to shit kittens at that)

And saw a village being raped and pillaged... (lots of kittens)

And goes into how she fought bandits... (MOAR KITTENS!)

And killed 5 men and crippled another for life... (ALL THE KITTENS!)

I nod. "Raiding doesn't really make for a sustainable economy. Much less if you want to grow, since it relies on increasing amounts of plunder. You'll likely have your job cut out for you if you want to aim for long term prosperity and expansion, resentment towards the Kingdoms aside."

"Yes. I know. I'm expected to do the impossible and be everything to everyone while at the same time trapped in Winterfel with no escape."

I tell him I'll try to find a way to get rid of it in a more permanent manner. The fact that it's less an abomination and more a more or less natural occurrence I'll keep to myself for now, since it could well be seen as an abomination from a certain point of view.

I should probably start and use a bit of Mind Trick mojo to help me along if they don't feel like talking. Usual interrogation stuff, plus what were they going to do with the women and children they were set to abscond with. I mean, I assume they were going to sell them off somewhere, but I want something more definite than an assumption to go on. Preferably a location too.

"Sometimes you'll want to exercise a little more discretion," I hand her my message. "The first part is fine, but keep in mind your mother is likely to read that. It's probably not a good idea to point some of these details out. And your father will read between the lines and know regardless."

"Yes. I know. I'm expected to do the impossible and be everything to everyone while at the same time trapped in Winterfel with no escape."

I get the feeling it's more he who's expecting that from himself. Still ...

I don't suppose Head Obi-wan has anything to say on the matter of how to get rid of this thing, or prevent it from manifesting again? The best idea I can come up with would be to try and get some more weirwood, infuse it with as much light-side as I can in the Winterfell Godswood, and then place those pieces at the individual caskets.

"Oh." She pauses. "Could you help me write it?"

"It'll have to be your words, but yes, at the very least I can give you advice."

And I do so. It shouldn't take long, since, well, limited raven legspace and all. She can include the bit about trailing me, but she _probably_ shouldn't write anything about the fighting or the village getting sacked. Escorting the refugees is, again, fine.

In general, though? My advice is to keep it short and factual, but that not everything needs to be explicit.

"Allies? All I have are Robb and Jon..." he scoffs at it. "Robb wouldn't take a shit without his father's approval and Jon's a bastard. Everyone else looks at me and sees my father."

"So you say your only worthwhile ally is _only_ heir to a Lord Paramount? That's far from insubstantial even if he is a dutiful son. And if you bring your concerns to Lord Stark, he might surprise you. Look at it as a challenge. After all, changing peoples' opinions should be good practice for when you have to deal with your countrymen."

That's going to take a while then, unless there's some way to have it manifest prematurely and hopefully while it's still weakened.

Do they have a port or camp they're using to take on supplies and cargo for the trip back? If so, where is/are those?

Seems they're part of a larger operation. Basically they'll strike towns and travelers in the guise of bandits, using the river system and streams to move via canoe and other small, lightweight boats, and take their slaves and ill gotten wealth to spots along the coast where they'll be picked up by smuggling ships.

Still, seems like they'd have some kind of camp, or camps that aren't too far from the coast. Far enough to be concealed, close enough to see or have lookouts see arriving smuggling ships so that they can start moving their merchandise. If so, that's a place to start looking.

We'll send all our findings to Ned via raven first.

All that would do is scare them away in the approach, most likely. How does the way of getting there look? If it's suitable, I'd suggest just bringing horsemen. Doesn't matter if they're sworn swords or just mounted infantry, speed in getting there will be one of the deciding factors.

That and at least they can keep up with me in terms of getting there.

Seriously, I'm keeping up with travel speeds of mounted knights while on foot here. The guy should probably realize Arya can do that kind of thing too, to an extent at least. Though this is kind of out of context for the locals.

As you searched through the objects you come across a strange box. It was a simple looking box of rose wood, with simple copper metal for hinges and the key lock that was a part of it. It has started to oxidize over and show green here and there. What was strange was the fact that you can slightly sense the force emanating from it. It was neither light nor dark, and it wasn't weak...but muffled. The only reason you can feel it at all was due to the key being in the lock, and turned, thus exposing whatever was inside of the box through the tiny little keyhole.

If you try to sense it, or get a deeper reading for it, you find your efforts rebuffed. The box itself was blocking you, and trying to go through the little hole was like trying to shove an elephant truck through a pin hole. The only way you can see what this is...seems to be you opening it.

You manage to make up a number of functioning repeating crossbows. The advantage is their high rate of fire. The problem is they don't have nearly as much stopping power as a standard crossbow.

Maybe not, but considering the fact that it has an effective range of 80 meters, a max of 120 meters, and a well trained user can easily launch 10 bolts in 15 seconds, the trade off is worth it.

I show Ed the weapons, explain them, and demonstrate, and remind that these are not good against heavily armored troops, nor as well made as Republic versions which, unlike these, can handle heavily armored opponents.

To make it a bit more scary, the quick load feature, remove the empty ammo box with a fresh, loaded one, which take a few seconds, and you can pretty much fire about 20-30 bolts a minute. We have a term for this back home. Bullet Hell. Especially with bolts that are on fire, and have armor penetration heads, or poison headed bolts.

Heh...I might make the north a military juggernaut regardless, if they use this right.

Whatever it is, it's... FEEDING off the deaths of his ancestors. It must be destroyed.

I nod and say "Such beings are called ghosts. This particular one is called a Wraith due to being evil, and a lifeforce eater. Rest Easy Lord Stark, and stay close to your sons. It will be taken care of."

I go forth and do so, but only the force spirit. Not the other spirits that are in there since not all of them are angry malevolent life eaters. I destroy it, with prejudice.

Arya and the daughter both recover well enough, as thier force training helps them. Bran's still too green and too young, and is having severe nightmares.

I continue with the daughters force discipline, which will help strengthen them against the dark side's whispers in the dark. As for the son, I take Eddard aside and lead him to the son during one night while he sleeps in nightmares, and I teach him to commune with the son in his dreams.

the only way for the son to beat back these nightmares, is for him to face his fear, but he is still very young and needs his family to help. So we will give him the opportunity to "slay" his fear with resolve and courage that is within the boy already. He just needs the chance.

Not like she didn't have it knocking around in her head ever since she'd decided she wanted to be the knight instead of the princess needing to be saved.

Maybe against peasant infantry but these things will barely register to armored knights.

Entering his dreams really doesn't do much, but collective meditation does much to help him come to terms. The nightmares are still there, but he's handling them.

As you open it, even just a crack, you are fully exposed to what is within and it nearly overwhelms you.

After a few moments of control, you get used to the sheer power of what is within.

As you open and look upon the object...you see this.

You recognize it immediately due to your "memories".

It was the Great Holocron!...or rather a piece of it.

Historically, yes, unless they were the bg roman ones. Fortunately the Republic can make the more modern Pneumatic/mechanical versions. Wink

More like they poisoned the hell out of them...

Darkspawn wear heavy armor. I also pointed out the variety of bolt tips, poison being one of them.

He's less than impressed by the damage.

As I pointed out before, I cannot make the modern military variants. They require materials and mechanical parts they not only not have in Westeros, but in some cases don't even have a proper name for in Westerosi.

This version of said weapon was the earliest incarnation of the repeater. It is a "peasant" weapon these days because of the ease of materials, light weight, almost no training necessary to use, and how fast it can be fired. Plus not all warriors in Westeros wear expensive metal armor. Most wear Chain mail, which is only for the regular army and takes time and money to make. Most armies wear leather at most, and bandits and the like don't wear armor at all, unless they are former soldiers or extremely well off bandits.

Besides that, this weapon is more specially made less for the battlefield, and more for unconventional warfare, and urban combat where space is more closed. In such places, where you get up and close to the enemy, where aiming is trivial, head shots are easy to make and deadly with such a weapon, despite what penetration this version has.

Food for thought.

And how common are armored knights compared to said peasant infantry? Or light infantry for that matter?

Seems to have been recently. The site seems to be well used.

So, ambush?

Some do. And if they do its normally fragmentary.

Not very useful in the north. Most northerners, even the noblemen, are capable bowmen. Unlike the southerners they don't forbade their small folk from hunting.

And how common are armored knights compared to said peasant infantry? Or light infantry for that matter?

The core of the armies.

Yeah, it has some seriously bad vibes. Seems like they believe in testing the merchandise in a number of inventive ways.

So, ambush?

Me and Arya will be lookouts since we have something of an advantage in that respect. And it might be a good exercise in keeping still and paying attention for her.

Pity I'm not more of a force scholar, or I'd try luring the slavers in with a false sense of security. Instead we'll have to rely on just superior scouting and concealment to do the job.

She shudders and grips her sword.

Alright. Give me 2d10 please.

And for the record, you do know the techniques even if you aren't very well suited for it.

She's having a very frank trial by fire. I'd say I'm sorry, but honestly, better for her to go through this than run into a similar situation poking about by her lonesome someday soon. Because face it, she would have.

Oh for the love of...

Well. Um. Yeah.

In the name of Raptor Jesus and all his prehistoric pals... Oi vey!

You're suck there for TWO WEEKS, meanwhile Arya has more and more problems dealing with the force presence of the place. She's a genius, but she's still a young girl and this place is a rotting cespit of lingering human suffering. This hidey hole isn't something new. It's just someone here's gotten really ambitious and it's been used and reused for generations. There's just some kind of dark presence here and while your little Padawan is tough, she's still just a girl.

And then two weeks later, the ships show up...

Ships. Plural, and not small ones either. There has to be 200 men here, both to reenforce and/or replace these slavers and probably supply other hidden bases along the coast...
